Overview

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat is seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual to fill the position of Project Coordinator for the Tripartite Simplified Trade Regime (STR).

The successful candidate will provide leadership and management for the implementation of the STR project aimed at increasing the formal agricultural trade participation among youth and women, ultimately boosting their incomes, improving food security, and facilitating trade in the designated corridors and countries of the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Management: Provide overall leadership and management for the STR project across the COMESA, EAC, and SADC regions.
  • Project Planning: Develop and update project plans, work plans, procurement plans, and budgets for annual review and agreement.

  • Activity Coordination: Coordinate and monitor the implementation of project activities to ensure alignment with objectives.
  • Reporting: Prepare and ensure high-quality technical and financial reports to SADC, AGRA, and stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with stakeholders including AGRA, SADC, COMESA, EAC, member countries, and partners to maintain strong working relationships.

  • Meeting Organization: Organize Steering Committee meetings, technical meetings, and workshops for effective collaboration.
  • Liaison Work: Liaise with government focal points, development partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitoring & Evaluation: Oversee the development and implementation of the M&E framework for tracking project success.

  • Documentation & Knowledge Management: Ensure proper documentation and effective knowledge management throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Policy Facilitation: Facilitate policy dialogue and negotiations related to the STR across the Tripartite region.
  • Team Leadership: Lead project staff, consultants, and partners to ensure successful implementation of project activities.

  • Risk Management: Identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Representation: Represent the project in relevant meetings and workshops.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Fulfill other duties as delegated by SADC’s Director of Industrial Development and Trade.

Reporting Structure

The Project Coordinator will report directly to the SADC’s Director of Industrial Development and Trade.

Duration & Nature of Appointment

The position is anticipated to last approximately 30 months. The Project Coordinator will work full-time at the SADC Secretariat in Gaborone, Botswana, adhering to standard SADC working hours.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:

  • A Master’s degree in Agricultural Sciences, Economics, Social Sciences, Finance, Agribusiness Management, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years in agriculture, agri-business, agri-food trade, and policy analysis with multi-country experience in Africa.
  • Proven experience in project management, including budgeting, resource mobilization, and proposal development.
  • Strong experience coordinating multi-stakeholder platforms for policy dialogue related to agriculture, agribusiness, market access, trade, and food security.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficient in data analytics and contextual analysis for inclusive and gender-responsive agricultural policy and trade facilitation.
  • Understanding of regional and international market dynamics for agricultural commodities.
  • Experience with agri-food market information systems and product management.
  • Familiarity with SADC operational and governance mechanisms.
  • Strong process management, facilitation, and presentation skills.

Professional Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage professionally with government officials and development partners.
  • Experience interacting with the private sector.
  • Excellent networking abilities across various stakeholder levels, including government, donors, NGOs, and community-based organizations.
  • Experience working with or within international and donor organizations in program management and implementation.
