Org. Setting and Reporting
In alignment with UN General Assembly resolution 72/279 (May 31, 2018), this position has been established to lead the United Nations development system (UNDS) in Zimbabwe.
The Resident Coordinator functions as the highest-ranking, impartial authority on sustainable development initiatives at the national and local levels, spearheading efforts in addressing sustainable development challenges in concert with the 2030 Agenda.
Responsibilities
As the Resident Coordinator, you will:
- Representation and Engagement: Represent the UN at all levels, engaging with the Government, civil society, and various partners to champion the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- Leadership: Direct the UN Country Team in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the UN Cooperation Framework in close consultation with government and partner stakeholders.
- Coordination of Support: Oversee the UN’s coordinated response to national needs and priorities, ensuring risk mitigation strategies are in place for SDG achievement.
- Promote Principles: Advocate for human rights, gender equality, and an inclusive approach to development, focusing on the commitment to leave no one behind.
- Knowledge and Partnership Development: Foster strategic partnerships, leveraging the diverse assets of the UN system to improve sustainable development outcomes and ensure alignment with national priorities.
- Funding and Resource Management: Govern country financing instruments and pursue funding avenues to further UN joint efforts toward the implementation of Agenda 2030.
- Security Coordination: Serve as the Designated Official for security, ensuring the safety of personnel and assets under UN auspices.
- Humanitarian Engagement: Lead the coordination of humanitarian responses where required, integrating such efforts with development agendas.
Competencies
Candidates should demonstrate strong leadership, cultural sensitivity, strategic partnership abilities, policy advocacy, and conflict resolution skills as outlined in the RC Leadership Profile (available here).
Education
- Required: Master’s degree in Development Studies, International Relations, Political Science, Social Sciences, Law, or equivalent; or a first-level university degree with relevant qualifications and experience.
Work Experience
- Essential: At least 15 years of international leadership experience, including:
- A minimum of five years in development, human rights, or humanitarian work outside one’s home country.
- Previous experience as a Resident Coordinator is mandatory.
- Desirable: Experience with UN Designated Official responsibilities, stakeholder engagement, humanitarian operations, advocacy, and political processes, especially involving marginalized groups.
Languages
- Required: Fluency in English. Fluency in French is advantageous.
