Call for Applications: African Epidemic Service (AES) – Epidemiology Track Fellowship 2025 (open to Zimbabwean professionals)

Are you a public health professional passionate about tackling real-world health challenges in Africa? 🌍 Applications for the second cohort of the African Epidemic Service (AES) – Epidemiology Track are now open!

The Africa CDC is building Africa’s public health workforce through the African Epidemic Service (AES) fellowship, a two-year applied epidemiology program. This program aims to strengthen disease prevention and response across the continent.

Financing:

  • Africa CDC will provide all learning and development materials and meet all costs associated with the fellowship, including travel-related costs (e.g., airfare, lodging, incidentals), stipends, hardware, and insurance.
  • Fellows will be supported to ensure that they have the relevant software and sufficient internet connectivity for online learning.

About the Fellowship:

The Africa CDC has developed a continental African Epidemic Service (AES), an elite workforce hosted and directed by the African Union. The African Epidemic Service has three tracks namely, Epidemiology, Laboratory Leadership and Public Health Informatics.

The African Epidemic Service – Epidemiology track is a two-year competency-based applied epidemiology training program that aims to strengthen the disease prevention and response capacity of African Union member states.

The first cohort of the AES – Epidemiology track commenced their training on August 2024. The program is now accepting applications for the Second cohort of the African Epidemic Service – Epidemiology track.

The AES – Epidemiology Track Fellowship offers:

  • A two-year competency-based applied epidemiology training program.
  • Three months of in-class training in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
  • 21 months of applied training at a host site within an African Union Member State.
  • Hands-on experience in data analysis, surveillance system evaluation, and outbreak investigation.
  • Expert supervision and mentorship from experienced public health professionals.
  • The opportunity to contribute to safeguarding Africa’s health.

Who should apply?

This fellowship is open to qualified applicants from African Union Member States with a strong interest in applied epidemiology. Applicants should possess:

  • A graduate degree in a public health discipline (e.g., Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Environmental Health, Occupational Health, etc.).
  • An MPH or equivalent degree with coursework in epidemiology or quantitative research methods.
  • At least three years of recent full-time post-graduate public health experience in an African country.
  • A national passport from an African Union Member State.
  • An official letter of support with permission from a government institution to attend the two-year training program.
  • Letters of recommendation from two reputable professional referees.

  • Evidence of recent full-time public health post-graduate experience in an African Country.
  • Brief curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum).
  • Motivation statement (2 pages maximum), outlining your formal education, work experience and why this program would be a good fit, and further outlining how this training will impact your country.
  • Optional: Evidence of additional relevant qualifications.
