Positions: Laboratory / Workshop Technicians – Mining Engineering (2 Posts)

Job Overview:
The Laboratory / Workshop Technicians will perform specialized and technical duties to support the operation and maintenance of the mining engineering instructional workshop and laboratory.

They will assist lecturers in conducting laboratory experiments and field studies related to rock cutting and thin section making, rock mechanics, and will be involved in analyzing the behavior of rock masses under various stress conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sample Collection and Preparation: Gather rock samples from field sites, clean, cut, and prepare specimens for laboratory testing according to established protocols.
  • Laboratory Testing: Operate various rock mechanics testing equipment, including unconfined compression machines, triaxial shear boxes, and Brazilian tensile testers, to measure rock strength and deformation properties.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Accurately record test data, analyze results using specialized software, and generate reports to summarize findings.
  • Field Data Collection: Assist in field investigations such as in-situ stress measurements, borehole logging, and rock mass characterization using geological mapping techniques.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Regularly maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality and adherence to safety standards.
  • Additional Duties: Assist faculty with lecture room instruction, maintain records and assignments, enforce laboratory rules and procedures.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • At least a National Diploma in Mine Geology, Rock Mechanics, or a related field.
  • Industrial or related experience is desirable but not mandatory.

Essential Skills:

  • Technical Skills: Understanding of basic rock mechanics principles, familiarity with laboratory testing procedures, proficiency in data analysis software.
  • Geological Knowledge: Basic knowledge of rock types, geological structures, and field mapping techniques.
  • Laboratory Skills: Experience in handling laboratory equipment, precise measurement techniques, and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to clearly document results, effectively communicate findings, and collaborate with team members.
  • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in relevant software applications.
