About PPLAAF:

The Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF) is a non-governmental organization established in France with operations in Senegal and South Africa. Comprising seasoned lawyers and journalists, PPLAAF is dedicated to providing legal support and advice to whistleblowers disclosing information vital to public interest. Our aim is to safeguard and advocate for whistleblowers, with a focus on strategic litigation and advocacy to promote transparency and accountability in African governance.

Since our inception in 2017, we have successfully supported numerous whistleblowers across various sectors, including high-profile cases that have unveiled major economic malfeasance. Our continuous efforts have led to the protection of whistleblowers and significant disclosures that resonate with the public interest.

Role Overview:

PPLAAF is seeking a dynamic and motivated Project Officer for Southern Africa to advance the organization’s strategic objectives in the region. This full-time position will entail executing and managing various projects, engaging with whistleblowers, overseeing ongoing litigation, implementing advocacy campaigns, organizing events, and effectively communicating PPLAAF’s mission to partners, institutions, and the media.

Key Responsibilities:

Whistleblower Protection

  • Engage with whistleblowers, responding to and following up on support requests.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations to assess the credibility of disclosures.
  • Provide comprehensive assistance, including legal, media, and logistical support.
  • Coordinate all facets of support provided to whistleblowers (media, legal, administrative, financial).
  • Conduct necessary research and maintain an updated database of whistleblowers.
  • Ensure meticulous record-keeping of all whistleblower documentation.

Investigation and Media Campaigning

  • Actively participate in investigations led by PPLAAF and its partners.
  • Assist in drafting reports related to whistleblowers’ disclosures and protection frameworks.

Advocacy and Awareness-Raising

  • Organize awareness-raising activities (workshops, conferences, webinars) to strengthen whistleblower protections.
  • Represent PPLAAF at various partner meetings (NGOs, civil society, authorities, etc.).
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with civil society organizations.

Transversal Tasks

  • Contribute to the administrative and financial management of PPLAAF, including grant proposals, activity/narrative reports, and financial documentation.
  • Assist in the recruitment process and mentorship of interns.
  • Undertake other tasks as requested by PPLAAF within the contractual scope.

Requirements:

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in a Civil Society Organization or similar field (anti-corruption, transparency, civic space protection).
  • Degree in Law, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field.
  • Strong project management capabilities.
  • Proven ability to independently define and meet objectives amidst diverse priorities.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Commitment to PPLAAF’s mission and values.
  • Knowledge of whistleblower protection laws and frameworks is a plus.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, including report writing and public speaking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to work in diverse international contexts.
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally.
  • Flexibility to work across different time zones when needed.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is advantageous.
