Job Title: Social Scientist (PhD) – Post Doctoral Medical Anthropologist (x1)

CeSHHAR Zimbabwe is a leading organization specializing in population health research and programming, particularly focused on sexual and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. We have established a robust national, regional, and international network of academic and community partnerships, supported by a diverse range of funders including the Wellcome Trust, Gates Foundation, and UNICEF.
In collaboration with key partners including the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Child Care, we are dedicated to evaluating national programs and assessing the impact, uptake, and cost-effectiveness of innovative reproductive health interventions.
JOB ROLE
The Social Scientist will report to the Director of the Climate, Environment & Health Department (CEHD) and will lead research projects under HIGH Horizon and HAPI in Mt Darwin District.
These projects aim to address critical knowledge gaps concerning the effects of ambient heat exposure on maternal and newborn health and will help inform community and health facility-level interventions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research Leadership: Design and implement research projects aligned with departmental objectives.
- Protocol and Grant Development: Collaborate on research protocols and grant proposals, ensuring timely approvals and organized tracking.
- Document Preparation and Ethical Approvals: Author protocols and manage ethical clearances for studies.
- Quality Assurance and SOPs: Develop and enforce Standard Operating Procedures, conducting audits for adherence.
- Research Coordination: Oversee planning, execution, and synchronization of research activities.
- Ethnographic Research: Lead ethnographic initiatives, selecting methodologies and conducting analyses.
- Team Leadership: Supervise research personnel, provide training, and ensure compliance with study protocols.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Engage with teams at the intersection of climate change and health.
- Data Oversight: Manage data collection, ensuring accurate capture and analysis.
- Academic Contributions: Contribute to manuscript development and reports with a social science perspective.
- Social Science Working Group: Facilitate the activities of the Social Science Working Group, managing meetings and discussions.
- Active Participation in CeSHHAR’s Citizenry: Contribute positively to CeSHHAR’s community, including mentorship and fostering a supportive culture.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- PhD in Social Sciences
- Publications in climate-related topics (an advantage)
- Valid GCP Certificate and Research Ethics certification
- Minimum 8 years of research experience
- Strong understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods
- Previous experience managing a field team
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and effective communication skills
- Self-motivated with excellent leadership abilities
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups
