The Nordic Africa Institute African Scholarship Programme 2026

The Nordic Africa Institute is pleased to announce the African Scholarship Programme for early career researchers based in Africa.

This programme offers a unique opportunity to pursue independent research projects in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities while benefiting from the resources and environment provided by the Institute.

Programme Overview:

Purpose:
The African Scholarship Programme aims to support early career researchers to develop their research projects at the Nordic Africa Institute. This initiative not only promotes research on contemporary Africa but also fosters collaboration between African and Nordic research communities.

Duration of Stay:
The scholarship allows for a stay of approximately 90 days (3 months). Note that the Institute is typically closed or operating at reduced capacity from 15 June to 15 August and 15 December to 15 January, thus these periods cannot be selected for the visit.

Financial Support and Benefits:

The scholarship package includes:

  • Return airfare (economy class)
  • Accommodation
  • Daily subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (about 40 USD)
  • An installation grant of 2,500 SEK (about 250 USD)
  • A dedicated workspace, including a desk computer in a shared office at the Institute

Access to specialized resources:

  • The Institute’s library, focusing on contemporary African literature in Social Sciences
  • Uppsala University Library
  • Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

Eligibility Criteria:

The scholarship is specifically designed for:

  1. Early Career Researchers:
    • Staff employed full-time at an African-based university or research centre, currently enrolled in a doctoral programme in Africa and lacking access to international scholarships.
  2. Postdoctoral Researchers:
    • Researchers who have completed their PhD within the last 4 years.

Focus Areas: Research should align with the UN Agenda 2030 core principles, particularly emphasizing gender issues and the role of women in society.

  2. Research Project Outline: A comprehensive 5-page research proposal.
  3. Work Plan: A detailed 1-page work plan focused on the duration at the Institute, outlining research objectives and expected results.
  4. Reference Letter: A signed letter of support from the applicant’s Head of Department or a senior scholar, confirming workplace affiliation and area of research.

Important Note: Incomplete applications will not be considered. This scholarship is not open to individuals currently or previously affiliated with the Nordic Africa Institute.
